Cretaceous Period Animals The Cretaceous period (144 to 65 million years ago) was the last part of the Mesozoic Era. It was the height of the dinosaurs and the beginning of the flowering plants. This period ended with a huge mass extinction. Some Cretaceous animals included T. rex, Triceratops, Elasmosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Ichthyornis, Ichthyosaurus, Megaraptor, Pteranodon, Spinosaurus, Velociraptor, and others. |
Cryptoclidus A large, extinct, swimming reptile from the time of the dinosaurs - a plesiosaur. |
Desmatosuchus An extinct reptile that lived over 200 million years ago. |
Dimetrodon An extinct, sail-backed, meat-eating animal from the Permian period (pre-dating the dinosaurs). |

Dinichthys Dinichthys was a family of extinct, armored fish that included the fish Dunkleosteus. This extinct family of fishes lived during the Late Devonian period, about 400 million years ago. |
Dinornis The largest bird that ever lived. This flightless bird is extinct, but it lived in New Zealand until the early 1800's. |
Dinosaurs Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived from about 230 million to 65 million years ago. |
Dodo The dodo is an extinct, flightless bird that lived on an island in the Indian Ocean near Africa. |
Doedicurus Doedicurus (family Glyptodontidae) was an ancient armadillo with a tail mace. It lived during the Ice Ages. |
Dunkleosteus An extinct, heavily armored fish from the family Dinichthys. It lived during the Late Devonian period, about 400 million years ago. |
Ekaltadeta A huge, extinct, meat-eating rat-kangaroo from Australia. |
Elasmosaurus An extinct, swimming, fish-eating reptile (a plesiosaur) that had four flippers and a very long neck. |
Elasmotherium Elasmotherium was a rhinoceros-like mammal that lived in the steppes of Eurasia during the Pleistocene. |
Estemmenosuchus A large "mammal-like reptile" that lived about 255 million years ago. |
Gerrothorax An ancient amphibian that lived over 200 million years ago. |
Giant Ground Sloth A huge, extinct herbivore from the Ice Age. |
Glyptodon Glyptodon was a car-sized armadillo that lived during the Ice Ages. |
Hyracotherium A tiny, extinct horse that lived 50 million years ago. Also called Eohippus. |
Ichthyornis An extinct bird from the time of the dinosaurs. |
Ichthyosaurus An extinct marine reptile from the time of the dinosaurs. |
Jurassic Period Animals The Jurassic Period (206 to 144 million years ago) was the time of the giant, long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs and other animals, like Apatosaurus, Archaeopteryx, Brachiosaurus, and Stegosaurus. |
Kronosaurus A huge marine lizard that lived during the time of the dinosaurs. |
Liopleurodon Liopleurodon was the biggest plesiosaur. It was a huge, swimming reptile that lived over a hundred million years ago, during the Jurassic period. |
Macrauchenia Macrauchenia was a camel-like mammal from the Pleistocene period - it is extinct. |
Mammoth Mammoths were extinct elephants that lived during the last Ice Ages. |

Permian Period Animals The Permian period (280 to 248 million years ago) is known as the Age of Amphibians; it preceded the Triassic period (when dinosaurs and mammals evolved). Some Permian animals included the Dimetrodon, Estemmenosuchus, Orthacanthus, Moschops, and Trilobites. |

Postosuchus Postosuchus is an extinct reptile that lived over 200 million years ago. |
Pteranodon Big, flying meat-eating reptile from the late Cretaceous period. |
Pterodactylus A flying, meat-eating reptile from the late Jurassic period. |
Quagga The Quagga is a recently-extinct relative of the zebra. |
Rhamphorhynchus An extinct, flying, fish-eating reptile with a long tail; it lived during the late Jurassic period. |
Saber-toothed Cat Saber-toothed cats were fierce predators from the ice ages. They are extinct. |
Smilodon Smilodon was a saber-toothed cat, a fierce predator from the ice ages. It is extinct. |
Tasmanian Tiger The Tasmanian Tiger was a large, meat-eating marsupial from Tasmania, mainland Australia, and New Guinea. It is probably extinct. |
Teratosaurus Teratosaurus was an extinct reptile that lived about 225 million years ago. |
Triassic Period Animals Dinosaurs and mammals evolved during the Triassic Period (248 to 206 million years ago). Some animal from that time include Coelophysis, Cyognathus, Desmatosuchus, Eoraptor, Gerrothorax, Riojasaurus, and Saltopus. |
Trilobite Trilobites are extinct marine arthropods that lived from about 540 to 245 million years ago. |
Woolly Mammoth The Woolly Mammoth is an extinct elephant from the Ice Ages. |
Woolly Rhinoceros The Woolly Rhino is an extinct rhinoceros from the Ice Ages. |
