John Singer Sargent: "Portrait of Madame X"
John Singer Sargent (born in Florence, Italy, January 12, 1856-died in London, England, April 15, 1925) was a portrait artist. Sargent was born in Italy to American parents, but lived and painted in England. The painting above was scandalous at the time, and was called "Portrait of Mme. X" (Mme. X was Mme. Pierre Gautreau); it was painted in 1884.
