The Bloodhound (also called St. Hubert's Hound) is the heaviest hound dog. This friendly but powerful dog is a natural hunter and can track scents with great accuracy; it can even follow trails that are two weeks old. These dogs have often been used by police to successfully track down criminals.

Origin of Breed: The Bloodhound was originally bred in Belgium in the 800's as a scent tracker.

Anatomy: The Bloodhound has folds of loose skin on its face and neck. The ears are long and droopy and the head is long and narrow. The Bloodhound tends to drool somewhat. It is from 23 to 27 inches (58-69 cm) tall at the shoulders and weighs about 80 to 90 pounds (36-41 kg). The short, smooth coat comes in shades of brown, black and red, with dark markings or flecked with white; the skin is loose and elastic.
