The Flag of Singapore
Singapore's flag was adopted on December 3, 1959, when Singapore became independent from Great Britain. The flag has two equal-sized horizontal stripes, red on the top, white on the bottom. There is a white crescent moon and a circle of five five-pointed white stars in the red section (near the flagpole).
The white color on the flag stands for purity and virtue. The red color stands for brotherhood and the equality of man. The crescent moon represents for a young, growing nation; the five stars represent democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The proportions of the flag are 2:3 (height to width). The flag was designed and created by a group that was led by the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore at the time, Dr Toh Chin Chye.
