The Labrador Retriever is a strong, friendly, intelligent, active, even-tempered dog. According to the American Kennel Club, it is the most popular breed of dog in America (the Golden Retriever is second).

The Labrador Retriever was originally bred in Newfoundland to help haul fishing nets ashore. The breed was refined in England. This dependable dog is a great pet, an excellent guide dog for the blind, and an able rescue dog for people lost in the woods. The energetic Labrador Retriever needs a lot of exercise in order to remain healthy.

Anatomy: The Labrador Retriever is a solidly-built dog. The short, dense, weather-proof coat is easily groomed. The fur is black, chocolate (deep brown), or yellow. Males are about 22 inches (56 cm) tall at the shoulders and weigh about 67 pounds (30 kg); females are from 21 to 22 inches (54-56 cm) tall at the shoulders and weigh about 63 pounds (28 kg). The tail resembles that of an otter; it is covered with thick, short hair and has no fringe.
