The West Highland White Terrier is a small, speedy, assertive, and lively dog. This strong-willed working dog was originally bred in Poltalloch, Scotland in the 1800's to hunt rats. The Westie was originally called the Poltalloch Terrier and the Roseneath Terrier.

Anatomy: The West Highland White Terrier is about 10 to 11 inches (25-28 cm) high at shoulders, and weighs 15-22 pounds (7-10 kg). This terrier has a very thick, white coat that requires a lot of grooming. The ears and tail are short and held erect.
