Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571? - 1610) was an Italian artist who revolutionized the art of the time by creating dramatic and realistic paintings. Caravaggio's Medusa was painted during the period 1590-1600. Medusa is a mythical female character whose beautiful long hair was turned into snakes by the jealous goddess Athena, and anyone who looked at Medusa would turn into stone.
