This scary spider decoration is great for Halloween. Each spider is made from a balloon and four pipe cleaners. You can line your porch with these huge arachnids or perch them on your living room curtains.
This craft can be tricky to make, as children often pop the balloons with the sharp ends of the pipe cleaners! Also, if the balloons are thin and brittle (which is often the case with grocery store balloons that have been sitting on the shelves for a while), twisting will be very difficult and the balloons may leak. This craft is NOT suggested as an activity for a group of kids! Also, keep all balloons away from young children.
Thanks to Barb of St. Catharines, Canada, for this great Halloween craft idea!
- Thick, round, black balloons
- A few inches of string or yarn, or a twist tie
- 4 black pipe cleaners
- White out (liquid paper) or white tempera paint
Instructions
Blow up a round black balloon so that it’s only slightly inflated. Tie the balloon shut.
Twist the balloon, making a large part (for the body) and a smaller part (for the head). Secure it with a piece of string or a twist tie. If your balloon isn’t stretchy enough to do this, use two balloons: one for the body and one for the head. Tie the two balloons together with their stems.
Fold 4 pipe cleaners in half. Twist the middle of each pipe cleaner and wrap around the twist in the balloon. This makes eight legs.
Fold and shape each leg to look like a jointed spider’s leg.
Draw eyes and fangs, using white-out (liquid paper) or white tempera paint. You can now decorate your house for Halloween with these huge, scary spiders!
