The Test of Time A Novel by I. MacPenn |
How do you tell achelousaurus and
pachyrhinosaurus apart? Also do you think that when the nasal
boss of pachyrhinosaurus hit an attacker, would those spikes in the middle of the frill stab at the same time?
from Donovan c., age 12, ?, singapore, ?; July 28, 2001
MIKE: Achelousaurus has the nasal boss over the nose and has curved spikes. Pachyrhinosaurus has the nasal boss behind the nose and the spikes are straighter. The spikes would not hit an attacker at the same time as the boss because they are oriented in different directions. The skull would be thrust upwards to use the boss and forwards to use the spike. For a complete treatment of ceratopsians, I recommend the book by Peter Dodson, THE HORNED DINOSAURS.
