If birds evolved from saurischian
dinosaurs, why does ornithischian mean bird-hipped?

TOM: Well, ornithischians were given their name because, like birds, the pubis bone in their hips points backwards. However, there are some saurischian dinosaurs which ALSO have backwards pointing hips: therizinosaurs and dromaeosaurs (raptors) being the most notable. In the case of
ornithischians and therizinosaurs, the backwards pointing pubis probably evolved to give the dinosaurs a bigger gut to digest lots of plants. In the case of dromaeosaurs and birds the backwards-pointing pubis is part of a rearrangement of the hip and leg muscles for a new type of walking.
