Food Plate

The US Department of Agriculture food icon "My Plate" suggests the proportion of various food groups in our diet. It lets us know the relative proportions of the food groups that we should eat each day.

These current recommendations (announced in 2011) divide the plate into four portions (including vegetables, fruits, grains and protein) plus a small serving of dairy.

The relative size of the proportions in the picture suggest the relative amounts you should eat. It is suggested that vegetables and fruits should be about half your plate. The other half should be whole grains and low-fat proteins. Adding a side dish of low-fat dairy completes a healthy diet.

Some foods (including sweets and fats) are not mentioned in the USDA food plate; eating too much of these is not healthy.
