HTML color digits

When writing web pages, colors are represented by six digits in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). These digits are in hexadecimal (base 16) instead of the usual decimal (base 10) digits we are accustomed to.

In base 10 there are 10 digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. In base 16, there are 16 digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A (equal to ten), B (equal to eleven), C (equal to twelve), D (equal to thirteen), E (equal to fourteen), and F (equal to fifteen). In this system, using six hexadecimal digits, there are 2²⁴ (roughly 16 million) possible colors! The chart below shows 216 of the possible colors.

Every color on a computer screen is made up of red light, green light, and/or blue light. In HTML, the first pair of digits controls the amount of red light, the second pair controls the amount of green light, and the third pair controls the amount of blue light. For example, primary red is #FF0000, lime green is #00FF00, primary blue is #0000FF, white is #FFFFFF, black is #000000, and mid gray is #808080.

In HTML code, colors are used for text and backgrounds. Some examples of HTML color tags include:
