Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (June 13, 1935 - ) is a Bulgarian-born American artist who has produced many works of art that often involving wrapping, surrounding, or juxtaposing objects with textiles - many are large-scale, ground-breaking, and temporary. Since 1961, Christo has worked with his wife, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (June 13, 1935 - ). Christo and Jeanne-Claude designed and financed The Gates in Central Park, New York City, New York, USA. This series of saffron-orange arches with hanging saffron-orange fabric was displayed for 16 days in late February, 2005.

The artwork consisted of 7,500 Gates that covered 23 miles (37 kilometers) of pathways in Central Park. Each Gate was 16 feet (4.87 meters) tall; the width of the Gates varied from 5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet (1.68 to 5.48 meters), depending on the width of the walkway. Orange fabric panels hung from the top part of the Gates, and extended down approximately 7 feet (2.13 meters) above the ground (adults could just touch them when walking under them). The Gates could be seen from satellites in space! After being displayed, the gates were removed and the materials were recycled.
