Comet Lovejoy C/2014 Q2

This photograph of Comet Lovejoy C/2014 Q2 is magnified four times more than the previous image.

The distinctive blue-green color is commonly seen in comets. Light of this color is emitted by the molecule C₂, composed of two carbon atoms, when it is hit by ultraviolet light from the sun.
