Immature Male Tule Bluet Damselfly

Immature Male Tule Bluet Damselfly

This is a damselfly—an immature male tule bluet.

Damselflies are closely related to dragonflies. In fact, confusingly, the term "dragonfly" is sometimes used to refer to the order Odonata, which contains both the true dragonflies (Anisoptera) and the damselflies (Zygoptera).

One damselfly characteristic you can see in this photo is that damselflies at rest generally hold their wings closed, by their sides. In contrast, dragonflies at rest hold their wings open.

Scientific name: Enallagma carunculatum
