Cedarosaurus was named by paleontologists Tidwell, Carpenter and Brooks (published in Oryctos, Dec. 1999, 2: 21-37) . Cedarosaurus means "Cedar lizard;" it was named for the Cedar Mountain Formation in South Central Utah, USA, where the fossil was found. The type species is Cedarosaurus weiskopfae.
