New Theropod Found in England
Speedy predator from the Isle of Wight
July 8, 1998

An amateur fossil hunter has found a new dinosaur on the cliffs on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. The almost complete skeleton is a long-legged, long-tailed, speedy, 12 feet (3.3 m) long meat-eater that dates from 120 million years ago during the early Cretaceous period.

This Velociraptor-like theropod had clawed limbs, razor-sharp teeth, very long hindlegs, and an extremely long tail. This predator must have been a very fast an agile runner.

Steve Hutt, Curator of the Isle of Wight's Museum of Geology at Sandown, who is heading the excavation, said, "Nothing quite like has been seen before. This was an animal which was incredibly graceful as well as being very tough. It had very long, powerful hands with big claws, and very long back legs. We were absolutely stunned by the length of the fibula and tibia (the calf bones of the leg). It was something completely new."

Excavation of the new dinosaur should take about two years.

Another new dinosaur, Neovenator salerii, a 26 ft (8 m) long theropod similar to (but smaller than) Allosaurus was found on the Isle of Wight two years ago.
