Location: South Africa (officially called the Republic of South Africa) is a country at the southern tip of Africa. South Africa is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and the Atlantic Ocean. The country of Lesotho is embedded within South Africa.

Capital: Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa.

Size: South Africa covers about 1,219,090 square kilometers (a bit less than twice big as the state of Texas). South Africa is the 25th largest country in the world.

Population: The people of South Africa are called South Africans. South Africa has the 25th largest population of any country in the world. The population of South Africa is about 49,109,107 (as of July, 2010).

Government: South Africa is a republic that is divided into 9 provinces. Independence Day is celebrated on May 31 (South Africa was formed from four British colonies on May 31, 1910). Freedom Day is celebrated each April 27.

Language: The official languages are IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi, and English.

Education: Girls and boys in South Africa go to school for an average of 13 years.

Literacy Rate: About 86.4% of the adults in South Africa can read and write. About 87% of the men and 85.7% of the women are literate.

Official Religion: Zion Christian 11.1%, Pentecostal/Charismatic 8.2%, Catholic 7.1%, Methodist 6.8%, Dutch Reformed 6.7%, Anglican 3.8%, Muslim 1.5%, other Christian 36%, other 2.3%, unspecified 1.4%, none 15.1%.

South Africa's FlagSouth Africa's Flag: The Republic of South Africa's flag (sometimes called the "rainbow flag") is a sideways green "Y" and also has areas of red, blue, black, yellow, and white. The black triangle (between the two arms of the "Y") is the hoist side (the side where it attaches to the flag pole). This flag was adopted on April 27, 1994.

The "Y" on the flag symbolizes the union of many groups of people in South Africa. The many colors represent the rainbow of people in South Africa.

Climate: South Africa is mostly semiarid (semi-dry);. It is subtropical along the east coast; days are sunny and nights are cool.

Major Rivers: The Limpopo, Orange and the Vaal rivers.

Terrain/Mountain Ranges: Interior plateaus are rimmed by rugged hills and a narrow coastal plain.

Highest Point: The highest point in South Africa is Njesuthi, which is 3,408 m above sea level; it is located in eatern South Africa on the border of Lesotho.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in South Africa is the Atlantic Ocean, at sea level.

Natural Resources: gold, chromium, antimony, coal, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, tin, rare earth elements, uranium, gem diamonds, platinum, copper, vanadium, salt, natural gas.

Major Industries: mining (world's largest producer of platinum, gold, and chromium), automobile assembly, metalworking, machinery, textiles, iron and steel, chemicals, fertilizer, foodstuffs, commercial ship repair.

Agricultural Products: corn, wheat, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables; beef, poultry, mutton, wool, dairy products.
