French painter Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was one of the originators of the impressionist style in art. In the Meadow (1888-1892) shows two girls who Renoir painted many times; the works were, like this one, colorful and serene. Sitting in a meadow, with flowers in hand, represents innocence. This is also a theme of Renoir’s other paintings of the two. (You can see the same two subjects in the painting Girls at the Piano.)
