French painter Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was one of the originators of the impressionist style in art. As the title suggests, Renoir’s Jeunes filles au piano (Girls at the Piano, 1892) shows two young girls, one girl reading music and playing piano while the other looks on. The same two girls were in many of Renoir’s works, each as colorful and serene as this one (the two girls can also be seen in the painting In the Meadow). Sketches of this composition in pastel and in oil paint, as well as several final oil paintings, exist.
