Government: Bangladesh is a parliamentary democracy that is divided into 7 divisions. Independence Day is celebrated on December 16 (Bangladesh became independent from West Pakistan on December 16, 1971).
Language: The official language is Bangla (official, also known as Bengali).
Education: Girls and boys in Bangladesh go to school for an average of 8 years.
Literacy Rate: Just under 48% (less than half) of the adults in Bangladesh can read and write. About 54% of the men and 41% of the women are literate.
Official Religion: Muslim 89.5%, Hindu 9.6%, other 0.9%.
Bangladesh's Flag: The flag of Bangladesh has a green field with a large red circle shifted slightly to the hoist (flagpole). The red circle symbolizes the rising sun and the sacrifice to achieve independence; the green background symbolizes the lush vegetation of Bangladesh.
Major Rivers: The Ganges, the Jamuna, and the Meghna meet in Bangladesh and flow into the Indian Ocean.
Terrain/Mountain Ranges: Most of Bangladesh is a flat river delta, downstream from the Himalayan Mountains.
Highest Point: The highest point in Bangladesh is Keokradong, which is 1,230 m above sea level; it is located in the southeast of Bangladesh near the border with Myanmar.
Lowest Point: The lowest point in Bangladesh is the Indian Ocean, at sea level.
Natural Resources: natural gas, arable land, timber, coal.
Major Industries: cotton textiles, jute, garments, tea processing, paper newsprint, cement, chemical fertilizer, light engineering, sugar.
Agricultural Products: rice, jute, tea, wheat, sugarcane, potatoes, tobacco, pulses, oilseeds, spices, fruit; beef, milk, poultry.
