Capital: Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia.
Size: Indonesia covers about 1,904,569 square kilometers (almost tree times as big as the state of Texas). Indonesia is the 16th largest country in the world.
Population: The people of Indonesia are called Indonesiains. Indonesia has the 4th largest population of any country in the world (after China, India, and USA. The population of Indonesia is about 242,968,342 (as of July, 2010).
Government: Indonesia is a republic that is divided into 30 provinces, 2 special regions, and one special capital city district. The National Holiday is Independence Day, celebrated on August 17 (Indonesia became inependent from the Netherlands in 1949). The Constitution dates from 1945. The government is led by a democratically-elected President.
Language: The official language is Bahasa Indonesia (a form of Malay). Other languages include English, Dutch, local dialects (mostly Javanese).
Education: Girls and boys in Indonesia go to school for an average of 13 years.
Literacy Rate: Over 90% of the adults in Indonesia can read and write. About 94% of the men and 86.8% of the women are literate.
Official Religion: Muslim 86.1%, Protestant 5.7%, Roman Catholic 3%, Hindu 1.8%, other.
Indonesia's Flag: Indonesia's flag was officially adopted on August 17, 1945, after Indonesia became independent from the Netherlands.
The Indonesian flag is a horizontal bicolor with two equal horizontal bars (red [top] and white). The height of this flag is two-thirds the width.
In Indonesian, this flag is called "Sang Saka Merah Putih" (meaning "lofty bicolor red and white"). The red symbolizes human blood and the white represents the human spirit. The design of this flag is based on the 13th century Javan Majapahit Empire flag that had nine red and white stripes.
Indonesia's flag is very similar to the flags of Poland and Monaco, two other red and white bicolors with the white on top.

Terrain/Mountain Ranges: The islands are mountainous, but most of the land is coastal lowlands.
Highest Point: The highest point in Indonesia is Puncak Jaya, which is 5,030 m above sea level; it is located on the large island of eastern Indonesia.
Lowest Point: The lowest point in Indonesia is the Indian Ocean, at sea level.
Natural Resources: petroleum, tin, natural gas, nickel, timber, bauxite, copper, fertile soils, coal, gold, silver.
Major Industries: petroleum and natural gas, textiles, apparel, footwear, mining, cement, chemical fertilizers, plywood, rubber, food, tourism.
Agricultural Products: rice, cassava (tapioca), peanuts, rubber, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, copra (dried coconut); poultry, beef, pork, eggs.
