Capital: Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam.
Size: Vietnam covers about 331,210 square kilometers (about the same area as the state of New Mexico). Vietnam is the 65th largest country in the world.
Population: The people of Vietnam are called Vietnamese. Vietnam has the 13th largest population of any country in the world (after China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia, Japan, Mexico and, Philippines). The population of Vietnam is about 89,571,130 (as of July, 2010).
Government: Vietnam is a communist state that is divided into 58 provinces and 5 municipalities. Independence Day is celebrated on September 2 (Vietnam became independent from France on September 2, 1945).
Language: The official language is Vietnamese.
Education: Girls in Vietnam go to school for an average of 10 years; boys go for an average of 11 years.
Literacy Rate: Just over 90% (9 out of ten) of the adults in Vietnam can read and write. About 93.9% of the men and 86.9% of the women are literate.
Official Religion: None. Religions represented by the people include: none 80.8%, Buddhist 9.3%, Catholic 6.7%, Hoa Hao 1.5%, Cao Dai 1.1%, Protestant 0.5%, Muslim 0.1%.
Vietnam's Flag: Vietnam's flag was adopted by North Vietnam on November 30, 1955; it was adopted in what had been South Vietnam on July 3, 1976, after the communist North Vietnamese won the civil war and the country was forcefully unified.
The Vietnamese flag has a red background with a five-pointed golden-yellow star in the center. The five points of the star stand for the farmers, workers, youth, intellectuals, and soldiers of Vietnam. The height of this flag is two-thirds the width; the star is two-thirds of the height of the flag.
Major Rivers: The Mekong River delta flows through southern Vietnam into the South China Sea.
Terrain/Mountain Ranges: The flat river delta are in southern and central Vietnam. Mountains run along the north and northwest of Vietnam.
Highest Point: The highest point in Vietnam is Fan Si Pan, which is 3,144 m above sea level; it is located in the far north of Vietnam, near the Chinese border.
Lowest Point: The lowest point in Vietnam is the South China Sea, at sea level.
Natural Resources: phosphates, coal, manganese, rare earth elements, bauxite, chromate, offshore oil and gas deposits, timber, hydropower.
Major Industries: food processing, garments, shoes, machine-building; mining, coal, steel; cement, chemical fertilizer, glass, tires, oil, paper.
Agricultural Products: paddy rice, coffee, rubber, cotton, tea, pepper, soybeans, cashews, sugar cane, peanuts, bananas; poultry; fish, seafood.
