"leaping lizards" alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words. "Slithering snake" is an alliteration because both word start with the "s" sound. "Notable knight" is an alliteration because both word start with the "n" sound (even though they start with different letters). |
Compound Words A compound word is a word that is made up of two or more other words. For example, the word dragonfly is made up of two words, dragon and fly. Read some common compound words and do activities on compound words. |
I'll (I will) Contractions A contraction is a shortened form of one or two words (usually verbs). Some contractions are: I'm (I am), can't (cannot), how's (how is), and Ma'am (Madam). |
homophones Homophones are words that sound like one another but have different meanings, like flower and flour. |
Opposites Opposites (antonyms) are things that are very, very different from each other. Some examples of opposites are: left and right, big and small, up and down, tall and short. |
MOM 2002 Palindromes A palindrome is a word, phrase or number that reads the same forward and backward. Some palindromes are: the name Bob, the number 101, and the phrase, "Madam, I'm Adam." |
Prefix - Root Word - Suffix Prefixes and Suffixes A prefix is a group of letters placed before the root of a word. A suffix is a group of letters placed after the root of a word. For example, in the word "nonconformist", "non" is a prefix, and "ist" is a suffix. |

Some punctuation marks are the period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), exclamation point (!), colon (:) and semicolon(;). rhymes Words that rhyme have endings that sound the same, like cat and hat, or kite and light. |
Similes A simile is a way of describing something by comparing it to something else, often using the word "like" or "as." For example, "He is as brave as a lion." Read common similes and do activities on similes. |
Vocabulary Worksheets These graphic organizers for vocabulary words can be used to help students learn new vocabulary words. For each new vocabulary word, the student writes the word, its definition, its part of speech, a synonym, an antonym, the draws a picture that illustrates the meaning of the word, and writes a meaningful sentence using the word. |
