Parts of Speech:
The words that we use can be divided into these classes:

• noun - A noun is a type of word that represents a person, thing, or place, like mother, apple, or valley.
• verb - A verb is a type of word that describes an action or a state of being, like wiggle, walk, run, jump, be, do, have, or think.
• pronoun - A pronoun is a substitute for a noun. Some pronouns are: I, me, she, hers, he, him, it, you, they, them, etc.
• adjective - An adjective is a word that describes something (a noun). Some adjectives are: big, cold, blue, and silly. One special type of adjective is an article, a word that introduces a noun and also limits or clarifies it; in English, the indefinite articles are a and an, the definite article is the.
• adverb - An adverb is a word that tells "how," "when," "where," or "how much". Some adverbs are: easily, warmly, quickly, mainly, freely, often, and unfortunately.
• preposition - A preposition shows how something is related to another word. It shows the spatial (space), temporal (time), or logical relationship of an object to the rest of the sentence. The words above, near, at, by, after, with and from are prepositions.
• conjunction - A conjunction is a word that joins other words, phrases, clauses or sentences. Some conjunctions are: and, as, because, but, or, since, so, until, and while.
• interjection - An interjection is a word that expresses emotion. An interjection often starts a sentence but it can be contained within a sentence or can stand alone. Some interjections are oh, wow, ugh, hurray, eh, and ah.

When you spin the wheel, the parts of speech appear together with a definition and two examples. The parts of speech are: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The student then writes down the parts of speech and an example for each.
Common Abbreviations Learn common English abbreviations and print worksheets on abbreviations.	"leaping lizards" alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words. "Slithering snake" is an alliteration because both word start with the "s" sound. "Notable knight" is an alliteration because both word start with the "n" sound (even though they start with different letters).	art rat tar Anagrams An anagram is a word or phrase that is made by rearranging the letters of another word. For example, spot is an anagram of post.	Compound Words A compound word is a word that is made up of two or more other words. For example, the word dragonfly is made up of two words, dragon and fly. Read some common compound words and do activities on compound words.
I'll (I will) Contractions A contraction is a shortened form of one or two words (usually verbs). Some contractions are: I'm (I am), can't (cannot), how's (how is), and Ma'am (Madam).	Antonyms/Opposites Opposites (antonyms) are things that are very, very different from each other. Some examples of opposites are: left and right, big and small, up and down, tall and short.	Homophones Homophones are words that sound like one another but have different meanings, like flower and flour.	. , ? ! ; Punctuation Marks Punctuation marks are symbols that are used in sentences and phrases to make the meaning clearer. Some punctuation marks are the period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), exclamation point (!), colon (:) and semicolon(;). This is also a page of punctuation marks and other common symbols from the Little Explorers Picture Dictionary in English.
Match Punctuation Symbol Words and Pictures Match 10 punctuation symbol words to their pictures. The words are: comma, period, exclamation point, quotation mark, question mark, apostrophe, colon, semicolon, parentheses, hyphen. Or go to the answers.	rhymes Words that rhyme have endings that sound the same, like cat and hat, or kite and light.	MOM 2002 Palindromes A palindrome is a word, phrase or number that reads the same forward and backward. Some palindromes are: the name Bob, the number 101, and the phrase, "Madam, I'm Adam."	Simile A simile is a way of describing something by comparing it to something else, often using the word "like" or "as." For example, "He is as brave as a lion." Read common similes and do activities on similes.
Metaphor A metaphor is a way of describing something by equating it with something else. It is a comparison between two different things that have an important characteristic in common. For example, in the metaphor, "Freddie is a pig when he eats," both Freddie and a pig are sloppy eaters.	Vocabulary Worksheets These graphic organizers for vocabulary words can be used to help students learn new vocabulary words. For each new vocabulary word, the student writes the word, its definition, its part of speech, a synonym, an antonym, the draws a picture that illustrates the meaning of the word, and writes a meaningful sentence using the word.	Grammar Potpourri Worksheets Find synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, anagrams, and compound words, then capitalize, punctuate, and correct the spelling of sentences.	Parts of Speech: Write a Question for Each Answer In this worksheet, the student is given a series of short answers using parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.). For each answer, the student writes a short question.
Find a Word for Each Letter See if you can think of and write down a word that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Or go to a sample answer page.
