Spotted Sandpiper in Winter Plumage

Spotted Sandpiper in Winter Plumage

The spotted sandpiper can be identified by the orange beak and white eye rings, together with a distinctive white stripe just above each eye.

The solid white in this photo is winter plumage; during the summer breeding season, this cute bird gets the dark spots which give it both its common name and its scientific name.

Scientific name: Actitis macularius (or macularia)
