Two views of the partial solar eclipse of October 23, 2014. In a solar eclipse, the Moon passes in front of the Sun, obscuring the part of the Sun behind it.
The first photo shows the very first glimpse of the eclipse; the small "bite" at the upper right of the Sun is the Moon just starting to pass in front. Clouds had moved in just seconds before the beginning of the eclipse.
The second photo shows the maximum eclipse (here in Seattle). The clouds cleared for a few minutes around the eclipse maximum.
A large sunspot cluster happens to be visible on the surface of the Sun.
