The Sun at Two Solstices
|
|
The Sun on the Winter and Summer Solstices, six months apart.
The larger photo, on the right, shows the Sun on the first day of Summer, 2012, here in the Northern Hemisphere. There are a few sunspots visible at the far right, but this is the smallest amount of sunspot cover I've seen for a long time. These will disappear from view very soon with the Sun's rotation.
The smaller photo, on the left, is of the Sun on the first day of Winter, six months ago. I was lucky to catch a bird, probably a Canada goose, at the moment it flew in front of the Sun. Several sunspots can be seen in that photo.
The Summer Solstice is the day the Sun is as high as it gets in the sky, and the Winter Solstice is the day the Sun is as low as it gets in the sky.
