RAPTOR

Chaptor2 The Gallimimus (You have to read the sample to know what is going on!)

The Velociraptor looked at the Gallimimus. He didn't have time for this. He quickly hit the "Bird Mimic" with his tail. The Gallimimus went flying and hit the ground, but he wasn't ready to give up. If theese eggs got eaten the Gallimimus will die out. The Gallimimus picked up the eggs and ran as far back into the cave as he could. The little dinosaur hit something. He looked up at the two green eyes staring at him. The Gallimimus wasn't the ownly one in the cave.

The Gallimimus started back toward the Velociraptor, only he forgot about the Velociraptor. The carnvore leaped on to him. Something grabed on to the Velociraptor. A Megaraptor had grabed on to him. The Megaraptor was trying to eat the Velociraptor. He had managed to slip in while the T-Rexes wre fighting. The Velociraptor gammed his claw in the Megaraptor's mouth. The Megaraptor and Velociraptor were ready to have a fight. The fight of their lives...
from firebird, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 4, 2000

Here is some info on my book. It is about a Velociraptor and the rest of the dinosaurs during the drought. It shows what I think a Velociraptors life will be like during a drought.
from firebird, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 4, 2000

Not bad, the action takes place at a frightening pace though, try describing more. You can always borrow phases from a book like jurassic park if you are in a fix for good descriptons. I did this at first. After a while, you should be able to stand on your own and develop your own style.

VOTE REX.
from Billy Macdraw, age 18, ?, ?, ?; November 3, 2000

Tricerotops
from d.s., age 14, redwood city, alabamba, israel; November 3, 2000

I am just skiping around. This isn't the begining of my book.

A drought had rampaged through the land. Most every thing had died out. The Velociraptor had managed to live. He wasn't very healthy though. As the dinosaur walked on the baren land, he sniffed the air. The sent was strange but he thought he had smelled it before. A low growl came from behind the bushes. A tyrannosaurus crashed through the bushes. The Velociraptor ran for his life. He soon found a cave and ducked into it. Three T-rexes saw the dinosaurs and tryed to get the Velociraptor too. All Four T-Rexes battled over who was going to get the 3ft dinosaur. Not even a snack for a t-rex.

The Velociraptor heard the cave crumbling. He quickly dashed back farther into the cave as the cave crumbled down. He was trapped! But he wasn't the only one. The cave belonged to a Gallimimus. The Gallimimus ran on top of a rock, afraid of being eaten. The Velociraptor was more interested in the nest of eggs. He would have eaten anything right now. The Gallimimus got down, ready to protect his eggs...

Did you like my sample? Any coments? Tell me if I should do the whole book.

Raptor 15. Restaurant

" Some Chinese tea?" Verrand asked politely

" No thanks," Greg said. " I really can't take more." He pushed the teapot away and leaned back into his chair. They were in the control building's restaurant, leaving Calleja to sort out some bugs in the system. Greg had never taken the time to observe the restaurant carefully, but now he saw it was unlike the other rooms in the building that were strictly functional. The restaurant was elaborately built, with a slight hint of a Chinese restaurant in its lines. And their early dinner had been excellent, considering most of the restaurant had not been fully staffed yet.

" What time is it?" Verrand asked, all too politely again.

Greg checked his watch, " About a quarter past six, they should be on their way back by now." He looked at the old man.

" I see," Verrand said, strangely subtle.

Greg had noticed a change in the old man, he had become strangely quiet after footprint controversy, becoming a subtle, almost timid old man. Greg had put it down to age at first, but after observing Verrand for a while, he somehow sensed that the old man was worried about something.

" You know," Verrand said. " Some people would see what I'm doing here as evil or cruel, they say I have put the incredibly potent powers of genetic science to a poor cause." He paused.

Greg took a deep breath; he had heard this before.

" But I beg to differ." Verrand said. " Early biotech companies started out making pharmaceuticals; a cure for cancer of something. It's a long and painful process of research and development. And finally, after spending millions of dollars on developing a miracle drug, you should be able to charge as much as you want for it; after all, you invested in it and invented it."

" But does this happen? Of course not! People dying of cancer won't be grateful for paying five thousand per dose, they will be outraged! The government will force you to see reason, they will force you to lower your price to fit the consumer. If you ask me, helping mankind is very poor use of such technology form the standpoint of a businessman indeed."

" But what about consumer products?" Verrand said. " You don't need to have consumer products. The government will not force you to lower the price of a product the consumer can do without. If I charge fifteen million for a Tyrannosaur, who's going to stop me? After all, nobody needs to see a Tyrannosaur in a zoo to survive. And, far from being highway robbery, a costly price tag actually increases the appeal of the product. Having a Tyrannosaur in your zoo will be considered a status symbol Americans love that, so do the Japanese. Do you know how much we will make a year?"

" Fifteen billion?" Greg had read the company's projection.

" And that's speaking conservatively." Verrand said. " There's no reason to speculate wildly." He sawed slowly into his Edmontosaur steak, pausing to spread a bit of ketchup. " But you know, there's something that worries me more."

Greg looked at him silently, not knowing what to expect. The old man had a tendency to ramble, to retell old stories nowadays. However, Greg suspected something the old man was about to tell him something he had not herd previously before.

" It's the kids." Verrand sighed. " I am doing it for the kids." He ate a small piece of his steak. " That's why I told you to make those pets." He paused to chew.

" I am afraid I might not live long enough to see that dream come through." Verrand said wistfully. " This island had been built on the dreams of the kids in the world. I want to see those eyes sparkle when they see a Triceratops for the first time. I am doing it for the kids I tell you, doin-"

The lights went off, to be replaced by the orange glow of the emergency battery lamps.

" What the h#$%?"

" It's getting dark." Gurmit said. " I'm hungry." Slight drizzles of rain started to drum the jeeps lightly. The sky was growing darker with increasing rapidity, but the lights have yet to turn on.

" It's not too long from now." Drummond said. " We're retracing our route back to the control building." He led the jeep convoy past the small carnivore paddock, which look eerily deserted in the dim light. " I wonder why they haven't turned the lights on yet?" There was a click, it's noise clearly audible in the evening air.

" What was that noise?" Truman said. " It sounded like something being switched off." He looked around.

" Probably nothing," Drummond said. " I hope we can reach back before the rains." He continued to drive down the road, pass the Carnotaurus paddock.

" Damn! It's all screwed up!" Calleja said, groping in the darkness for a torch. He knocked over his Coke in the dim light and felt cool liquid on his right arm. " Damn!"

" What?" Verrand said, walking in and waving a torch, transfixing Calleja in the yellow glare. " What's wrong?" Greg followed closely behind.

" Must be a power surge due to lightning." Calleja said. " I hoped the technical team installed surge protectors to the modems as well, so many people do not know a surge can travel up your phone line- up into your system- bang! No more modem, no more motherboard, no more supercomputer."

" What?" Verrand said. " I didn't hear any thunder just now."

" Neither did I." Calleja said, "But it must have happened, I can't think of a single explanation. Damn! I should have saved my work! Now I have to redo all the troubleshooting I did in the last three hours! Damn!"

" So?" Verrand said. " What should we do now?"

" I better restart the system." Calleja said. " There must be an outages all over the island. This system also controls the power grid- no system, no power grid."

" You mean the electrical fences are off?"

" Yes." Calleja said, finding the torch and using it to scan the walls. " Probably nothing will happen… but you never know."

" You mean the animals can escape?" Verrand asked worriedly.

" I don't think so." Calleja decided to humor the old man. " Look I have seen Thai people tie freshly captured elephants with a steel chain to a metal post. No matter how hard the animal pulls, he can escape. Naturally, the elephant gives up after a while."

" Now, the average Thai is not terribly rich, and steel chains and metal posts are expensive. So the people now tie the animal with a flimsy rope to a wooden post loosely rooted in the ground. Now, logic tells us the animal should escape as pulling free is easily within its strength. But does the elephant escape? No. Do you know why?"

Verrand shook his head.

" That's because the animal has already given up all hope of escape." Calleja said. " In its mind, the rope, like the chain is completely unbreakable. The animal gives up even trying to escape, tied down by a flimsy rope."

" I know it's the same way with the animals here. They will not attempt to knock down he fence as memory tells them it hurts to come into contact with it. So I say, electrified or not, the animals will still be equally reluctant to go near the fences, much less breach them." He paused. " You see what I mean?"

Verrand nodded.

" Good." Calleja said. " We still have the island, this is just a temporary power failure. Now, if I could find the circuit breakers…"
