Dino Talk June 16-30, 2002: A Dinosaur Forum

DWF4:Chapter 3 has been up for QUITE A WHILE. Has anyone read it?
from Joe Bob B., age 11, Menlo Park, ?, ?; June 30, 2002

Yesterday was an interesting day in my backyard.
First , a mother Black-tailed deer and her two children wandered into the yard through a gap in the fence. We left them alone until it was suggested that the deer would eat the roses and such so we were forced to chase them away. Then, A black California Kingsnake with pale yellow stripes arrived. It was about three feet long and was absolutely terrified of us, so we left it alone.

"Well here's a new post. sorry I haven't been posting. I haven't got around to it these days.

By the way, Moas became extinct in the 1600s, no?"

I don't think that an exact date for the last ever Moa dying is known, but it was about 300 years ago. Yes, probably the late 1600s.

They where being hunted quite badly already before the Europeans arrived. Actually, since there's 15 recognised different species of Moa, different species would have died out at different times.

Hellooooo?!?

Anybody there?!?

I got more good news! From my point of view, anyway.

My mum wants to get a new PC with a scanner so I'll be able to post Dino art.

Don't worry JC, I won't post pictures as often as I post on this forum!

One or two pics will do.

""and Moa skeletons"
Well, Moas can be considered dinosaurs, because they are birds, and the Avialae is a stem based taxon within the Maniratora."

Yeah, but Tom G is talking about the more primitive, extinct dinosaurs.

Cool, so birds must be super advanced. Respect the birds.

If dinosaurs rule the planet for 130 million years and where so successful and where very advanced life forms by 65 MYA, hell, they where very advanced life forms in comparison to everything else on the planet by the start of the jurassic, and birds are very advanced dinosaurs, then birds must be, well, very highly evolved life forms. For mammals you can subtract the whole of the dinosaur's reign when calculating how long they where dominant species on the planet, because basically the dinosaurs kept them as tiny insectivorous shrew like creatures. So birds have more evolution behind them than mammals.

"...in other mueseums here they have lots of Elasmosaur and Tylosaur fossils and Moa skeletons (i know they're not dinosaurs)"

Yes, I was going to say that you have some pretty good plesiosaur and mosasaur finds in NZ. What you lack in dinosaurs you make up for in sauropterygians!

"Man...My winter holidays are in 2 weeks!"

Well you're at the other end of the world from most of us here.
